I became a member of NSBE during my freshman year of college at the University of Miami, Fall 2002.
My most memorable NSBE experience was my 1st National Convention in 2003 in Anaheim, CA where I was able to see thousands of black engineers come together under a common bond. This was the first time I was able to see the student leadership in full action and I knew at some point I would like to be in their "shoes" one day. This was also my first time attending a professional career fair where I got experience in networking and interviewing; many of the recruiters I see year after year.
I wanted to be a NSBE leader in order to gain experience with working on a student managed executive board. I felt that I could strengthen my skills as a leader and better improve my public speaking skills, management techniques, and presentation capabilities. From my first year of being a NSBE member, I fell in love with the mission of the Society and wanted to be able to ensure that the mission would be kept alive and strengthened in years to come.
Being a NSBE leader has allowed me to give back to an organization which has given so much to me. I have been fortunate enough to have met and formed relationships with corporate and academic dignitaries, other collegiate and graduate engineers, and grade school children interested in pursuing engineering in the future. During my leadership experience I was able to manage a project from start to completion including its planning, human resources, and implementation. Since I have been a student throughout my NSBE tenure, NSBE leadership has taught me how to better manage my time in order to achieve success in everything I set out to do, and when I feel I am slipping a little, I am provided with advisors who can provide me with guidance to keep me on track.
